French, Schwartz named first-team All-Ohio

Honors go to Canfield’s French, Howland’s Schwartz

Staff report

The Canfield High School football team’s undefeated regular season was acknowledged in Tuesday’s release of the all-Ohio football teams for Divisions II and III.

Three Canfield players received high honors in the list compiled by members of the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association, most of whom were voters for the former Associated Press All-Ohio teams.

Defensive back Paul French was named to the first team in Division III.

Howland punter Michael Schwartz received first-team honors.

Cardinals linebacker Angelo Petracci and defensive back Paul Breinz were picked for third-team.

The Cardinals went 10-0 in the regular season, winning the All-American Conference Red Tier. Canfield won playoff games against Aurora and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin then lost to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Region 9 final.

The Cardinals posted four shutouts: Alliance, 34-0; East, 24-0; Poland, 28-0; and Aurora, 23-0. They limited Boardman, Niles and NDCL to one score each.

Canfield’s Vinnie Fiorenza and Sam Accordino were named honorable mention, as was Howland’s Brandon Matlock.

In Division II, Boardman linebacker Kareem Hamdan was named to the third team.

Teammate Adam Huzicka and East’s Will Howard received honorable mention.
