Four people injured Sunday in Route 5 crash

JOHNSTON TOWNSHIP — Four people in two vehicles were injured Sunday afternoon in a crash involving snow-covered roads along state Route 5 near state Route 88. The crash occurred at 2:47 p.m. in a heavy snow squall.

A 2016 Kia Rio was traveling northeast on State Route 5, just south of State Route 88. A 2004 Ford Explorer was traveling southwest on State Route 5. The Kia lost control, sliding into oncoming traffic, where it was struck by the Ford, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The Kia left the road, resting in a ditch. The Ford spun out, resting in the southwest lanes. The driver of the Kia, Howard J. Lovett, 35, of Niles, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Two juvenile passengers in Lovett’s vehicle were injured with one taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital and one to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford, Kathryn Gray, 75, Cortland, was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation. All occupants were wearing seat belts.
