John Greco signs with New York Giants
Former Cleveland Browns guard John Greco signed a deal with the New York Giants on Tuesday.
Greco, a Boardman High School graduate, was released by the Browns in September after playing six seasons in Cleveland.
Greco started 70 games during his time in Cleveland and played 111 games for the Rams to start his career.
Following his release, the Valley native signed with the New Orleans Saints, but didn’t play before being released by the Saints last week.
The details of the contract were not released.
Collins goes on injured reserve
Browns linebacker Jamie Collins has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Collins tore the MCL in his right knee while returning an interception in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. The 27-year-old former Pro Bowler is one of the Browns’ best players and they’ll have to try to get their first win without him.
Collins signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension with Cleveland during the offseason. However, he played in only six games this year, missing three games with a concussion before hurting his knee.
James Burgess will replace Collins in the starting lineup. Collins finished with 31 tackles, a forced fumble and a pick of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Collins is a captain and highly regarded by Cleveland’s players. Browns rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer called him “an ultimate leader.”
Fox to bar Olsen’s access to team
Fox is limiting the amount of pre-game access to the Minnesota Vikings this week for guest analyst Greg Olsen, in response to concerns raised by the team about an opposing player on the broadcast crew.
The Vikings host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, when Olsen and the Carolina Panthers are on their bye. Olsen has missed the last eight games with a broken foot, but he could return from injured reserve in a week. The Vikings play Dec. 10 at the Panthers.
Fox Sports issued a statement Tuesday confirming the restriction for Olsen, the three-time Pro Bowl tight end. Fox officials said they “fully respect” the concerns of the Vikings.
Matt Hasselbeck (2014) and Marcus Allen (1994) are other players who’ve worked as analysts for Fox while still an active player.
Birds sign former Giants tackle
The NFL-leading Eagles have signed former New York Giants offensive lineman Will Beatty to provide more depth.
Beatty started 58 games for the Giants at left tackle from 2009-2014. He replaces Taylor Hart, who was released on Tuesday to make room on the roster.
The Eagles lost nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters earlier in the season. Halapoulivaati Vaitai has started in his place.
Beatty played six games in 2016 after missing the 2015 season with a torn pectoral muscle. He’s the second veteran player with a Super Bowl ring to join Philadelphia in two days.
The Eagles (8-1) signed linebacker Dannell Ellerbe on Monday. Ellerbe played for the Dolphins and Saints and was part of the Ravens’ championship team in 2012.
Long-snapper placed on IR
The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed a second long-snapper on injured reserve.
The team put veteran Matt Overton on IR and signed free agent Colin Holba to fill his spot on the 53-man roster Tuesday. Holba will make his NFL debut Sunday at Cleveland.
Overton injured his right shoulder against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. He joins Carson Tinker on IR. Tinker tore a ligament in his right knee in August and had season-ending surgery.
Holba was a sixth-round draft pick by Pittsburgh in April. The Steelers released him in final roster cuts in September.
