Students at Poland Union Elementary have been in and out of the greenhouse a lot lately due to the weather warming up.
Each student was given the opportunity to go to the greenhouse to plant tomatoes to take home. Along with the tomatoes, the students planted and took home flowers for Mother’s Day coming up.
“I like how we can plant flowers and vegetables,” said second-grader Mya Lister.
Many of the students said they enjoyed being able to learn in a hands-on way and having the opportunity to take home something they helped take care of themselves. The students were all given instructions on how to care for the tomato plants and the flowers.
“My favorite part was being able to grow the plants,” said second-grader Derek Evan.
The students all had plans of what they wanted to do when the tomatoes grew. Two of the students in unison said “I don’t like tomatoes” then the others followed, but they had other ideas of how to utilize the plant. There were even mentions of making ketchup out of the tomatoes.
Some of the second-grade students came up with names that they wanted to call their tomato plants. Many of the students were eager to take home a flower for Mother’s Day to give to someone special to them.
The greenhouse at Union Elementary gives the students an opportunity to learn about the environment and science while having something in the end to show for it.
