WEDNESDAY’S RESULTS TENNIS
Division II sectional
Top-seeded singles players Greg Morgione (Ursuline), Jake McDivitt (Lakeview), Armond Nannicola (Warren JFK) and Andrew Engartner (Cardinal Mooney) advanced on Wednesday to today’s quarterfinals in the Division II sectional tournament at Boardman High School.
Today’s winners will advance to Saturday’s championships.
Today’s matchups feature the top-seeded Morgione against Jordan Brown (West Branch), the second-seeded McDivitt against Nate Nord (Poland), the third-seeded Nannicola against Marshall Ney (West Branch) and the fourth-seeded Engartner against Hunter Dickson (Lakeview).
The area’s doubles teams reached the semifinal round Wednesday. The duos who advanced are the tournament’s top four seeds and all have qualified for next week’s district tournament in Akron.
The semifinals match-ups are: Top-seeded Austin Arfaras and Luke Tsudis (Ursuline) vs. fourth-seeded Justin Bofenkamp and James Martuccio (Warren JFK) and third-seeded Sam Delatore and Sam Scotford (Poland) vs. second-seeded John Silbaugh and Anthony Innocenzi (Lakeview).
Cardinal Mooney 7, Rootstown 1
Jake Fonderlin went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Dean Lauer, Dominic Pecchia and Alex Wollet each had two hits in the sectional-final win. Pecchia had three RBIs. Pitcher Ryan Stafanec pitched all seven innings, allowing no earned runs, striking out seven and walking just one in the win. The Cardinals will play top-seeded Canton Central Catholic Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Cene Park in a district semifinal.
Canton Central Catholic 5, Springfield 4 8 innings
A.J. Marko’s sacrifice fly to right drove in Austin Beck and CCC walked off with the win in a sectional final. The Crusaders had tied the game with two outs in the seventh on an RBI single by Calvin Burns that drove in two runs. Brannon Brungard led the Tigers with four hits, including an RBI. Zach Renldy also had an RBI.
South Range 2, St. Thomas Aquinas 1
Brycen James had a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth with two outs to score Brandon Youngs, propelling the Raiders (17-5) to a district semifinal against Crestview Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Cene Park. Jared Bajerski had an RBI to score Jack Bajerski.
LaBrae 10, Berkshire 7
Berkshire led early with three runs in the third inning. LaBrae was able to take the lead in the fourth with six runs and never relinquished the lead. JT Wolke pitched five innings with four strikeouts. Malakai Roberts had three hits, two RBIs and one run for LaBrae.
Lowellville 13 Valley Christian 4
The Rockets jumped out to an early lead over the Eagles on route to a victory. Austin Malutic, Bryan Harris and Vinny Kacir each had two hits for Lowellville. Peterson and Murray each collected multiple hits for Valley Christian.

Howland 5, Canfield 4
Trailing 4-1 headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers scored four runs to walk off with the win. Zachary Campbell went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Parker Hayden went 2-for-4 as well with an RBI for Howland. Spencer Wooley, Anthony Vross, Alex Hernandez and Ricky Havrilla each had two hits.
Newton Falls 8, Girard 3
Hayden Sherwood had three hits for Newton Falls while Jordan Edmonson had two. David Hakari and Edmonson each had two RBIs as well. Tyler O’Dell had two hits for Girard.
Struthers 6, Jefferson 5
Stephen Mistovich hit a two-RBI single to give Struthers the lead in the sixth inning, and eventually the win. The Wildcats had 11 hits, John Medvec, Vince Cummings, Mistovich and Jake Shaffer each had two hits in the winning effort.
West Branch 12, Canton South 6
Jon Snyder went 3-for-3, T. J. DeShields had three hits and drove in two runs and Brant Alazaus and Cole Bates each had two hits and drove in three runs in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference win by the Warriors (18-7, 9-3). Seth Schroeder also had two hits for West Branch. J.C. Phillipi went 4 for 4 for Canton South (6-17, 5-8).
Mathews 12, Warren Harding 2
Anthony Oulton and Dillon Canter were able to get three hits apiece and Jordan Brown chipped in with a triple for Mathews.
Boardman 3, Twinsburg 2
Lauren Gabriele hit a two-run homer and doubled as the Spartans won a sectional title. Vanessa Roush drove in the other run. Winning pitcher Ashley Cornelius struck out seven. Twinsburg’s Najah Thortnton tripled and doubled.
Aurora 8, Austintown Fitch 6
Lisa Callahan drove in two runs as Aurora won the sectional title. For the Falcons, McKenzie Luknis’ three hits included a homer. Lainie Simons’ two hits drove in two runs. Kayla Kelty and Maddie Everhart had RBIs.
Poland 29, Niles 2
Mandy Wire went 3 for 3 with four RBIs while Ally Nittoli hit a three-run homer and ended up with four RBIs in the five-inning win. Jess Serrick had three hits while Harley Kish added two more in the sectional-semifinal win. Brooke Bobbey, Ashley Wire and Monica Kurjan combined for the win. Poland moves on to play Marlington on the road in a sectional final today at 4:30 p.m. For Niles, Laura Hayes and Jay Carson had base hits.
Salem 2, Ravenna 1, 10 innings
Clara Janofa pitched all 10 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three. Taylor Thorpe had two hits for the Quakers and scored the go-ahead run. Jessica Slocum made a diving catch to save a double down the right field line in the bottom of the 10th to secure the Salem win. Alyssa Laubacher, Bailee Thorn and Sydney Kline each had hits for Salem. Hannah Welling struck out 16 in the loss and doubled for the Ravens.
Howland 8, Girard 0
South Range 3, Black River 0
Pitcher Caragyn Yanek pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and walking just one in the win for the Raiders (15-4). Madison Weaver, Codi Taylor and Lydia Baird each had RBI singles while Hope Thomas had two singles in the win.
Ursuline 7, Crestview 3
Jordyn Kenneally and Emma Ericson combined on a five-hitter as Ursuline beat Crestview. Kenneally also had three hits, including a double. She scored two runs. Haley Eskra and Emma Smith doubled for Crestview. The Irish meet Mineral Ridge in a Division III sectional semifinal at 4:30 today at the YSU Softball Field.
Mineral Ridge 25, Sebring 2
The Rams tuned up for their tournament opener against the Irish by crushing the Trojans. Ariel Laneve drove in five runs with a single, two doubles and a triple and Lexy Haynes tripled and drove in a run.
Springfield 13, McDonald 4
Springfield exploded for nineteen hits as they handed McDonald their first loss of the season. Lindsey Druschel led Springfield’s offensive fireworks with four hits, which included a pair of singles, a pair of doubles a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Cassie Bacon chipped in with four hits as well, which included three singles and a double.
