LIBERTY

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is taking over operation of the Logan Swim and Tennis Club, which will open for the season in May.

The club, at 3245 Logan Way, which also has tennis courts, shuffleboard, boccie and a concession stand on a 6.5-acre parcel, will now be known as the JCC Logan Campus.

Michael Rawl, executive director of the JCC and a longtime shareholder of the swim club, said Monday the new arrangement will help both entities.

“We’ve been working on [this deal] for two years,” said Rawl, adding it will be in effect for the foreseeable future. Rawl said he “was not a liberty” to discuss financial details of the deal.

“The Logan Swim Club has been operating since the 1960s and has had similar fortunes as Liberty,” Rawl said. “It used to be the place to be.”

The club stayed in business but was unable to invest in improvements and maintenance, Rawl said.

“We saw an opportunity to expand and help the North Side, and the club saw an opportunity for its pool to continue to say open. We are helping each other,” he said.

He said improvements will be made to the facility, including repainting the pool.

The JCC’s main facility at 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, has an indoor pool, he noted.

The takeover is in keeping with the JCC’s Beyachad Youth and Family Initiative. Other elements include the opening of dance and music schools, a lowering of the family membership rate by $200 per year, and decreased prices for all youth programming.

Beyachad is a Hebrew word that means “coming together” and is emblematic of the JCC’s mission and its relationship to the Youngstown North Side community, Rawl said.

Under the new arrangement, the Logan club will cease to exist. All JCC members will have access to the Logan Campus at no extra charge, and current Logan members – and others – can still go to it simply by purchasing a JCC membership.

The Logan pool is 75 feet long with segments jutting off at right angles from each end – one a deep end, the other shallow. It also has a baby pool.
