ERIE, PA.

The vehicle that John Peters, 91, of Sodom-Hutchings Road, Farmdale, was driving when he disappeared five days ago was recovered early Wednesday by Erie police before the elderly man was officially reported missing.

Erie police witnessed via video Peters’ 2006 Dodge Caravan as it was being abandoned about 1:18 a.m. Wednesday in the docks area of the city near Lake Erie. The vehicle was towed later that day, Erie police said Sunday; however, there was no sign of the missing man.

Peters is a white male, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 155 pounds. He was last seen wearing green Dickies clothing.

‘St. Practice Day’

Local dog-rescue group Every Dog Matters will take part in the annual “St. Practice Day” beer festival Friday in the Austintown Plaza.

The beer-tasting fundraiser will be hosted by O’Donold’s Irish Pub & Grill at 6000 Mahoning Ave. The event, which will feature more than 100 beers from 30 brewers, runs from 7 to 11 p.m., with early admission for VIP ticket holders. Regular tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. VIP tickets are $45 in advance and $55 at the door.

The fundraiser will benefit the foster-based organization that provides veterinary care, food, medications, training and other services for the dogs it rescues.

Guy Burney of the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence will present “Crime and Punishment: Community Intervention to Reduce Crime” at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 2812 Hillman St. Clarence Boles, community activist and managing editor of The Buckeye Review, will serve as moderator.

Syrup open house

The Northeastern Ohio Forestry Association will host its annual Maple Syrup Spring Open House at Misty Maples Sugar House, 10644 W. Middletown Road, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event includes seeing sap boiling into maple syrup, walking in the woods to see the tubing collection system and sampling some hot maple syrup straight from the evaporator on vanilla ice cream.
