Bigger, better city summer school program

YOUNGSTOWN

More than 2,000 Youngstown City School students are enrolled in a revamped summer school program, and the district’s transportation department is piloting a new effort that will allow parents to plan when the bus comes to pick up kids.

It’s called Versatrans. More information is available on the district’s website, www.ycsd.org. Click the “About Us” tab at the top left of the screen. Find “Departments” in the drop-down menu. Click on “Departments” and scroll down to “Transportation.”

A smartphone app of Versatrans is available, too, so families won’t have to worry about children missing the school bus.

The city schools offered a summer school program last year but it wasn’t as extensive. About 450 students participated.

This summer, enrollment includes those who were directed to attend because they were in danger of being retained and those who enrolled to brush up on their skills during the summer.

Transportation, along with breakfast, lunch and a snack, are provided by the school district at no cost to families. Programs run through June.
