Scrappers lose finale against Black Bears

GRANVILLE, W.Va.

Lucas Tancas hit a run-scoring triple in the second inning, leading the West Virginia Black Bears to a 7-1 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Friday night.

The triple by Tancas came in the midst of a three-run inning and gave the Black Bears a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Tancas scored on a groundout.

The Scrappers’ lone run came on Will Benson’s double in the second.

Blake Weiman (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Mahoning Valley starter Francisco Perez (1-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game.

West Virginia took advantage of some erratic Mahoning Valley pitching, drawing a season-high seven walks in its victory. The Black Bears (7-4) are tied with the State College Spikes atop the NY-PL’s Pinckney Division.

The Scrappers (6-5) begin a road series against the last-place Auburn Doubledays (3-8) at 6:05 tonight.
