The Boardman Middle Schools performed their annual winter band concerts on Jan. 11 and 12 at Boardman High School.
Boardman Center Intermediate School and Glenwood Junior High School have combined to create a band program for students in fifth- through eighth-grade. The fifth- and seventh-grade bands performed on Jan. 11 under the direction of Mike Shevock and Tim Tuite.
The songs performed ranged from old, classic songs to newer songs that are being played on the radio. The students spent months preparing for their concert to show how well they’ve learned the music and are able to play it themselves.
The sixth- and eighth-grade bands performed on Jan. 12 directed by Shevock and Tuite and the eighth-grade jazz ensemble was directed by Boardman High School band director Thomas Ruggieri.
Between the two-night performance, there were several students who were featured with an improvisation solo in different musical styles.
Along with musical instrument solos, there were vocal solos. Ruggieri mentioned during the jazz ensemble how he likes to utilize those students who have talented singing voices.
Tuite, Shevock and Ruggieri all stated how proud they are of the students and are grateful friends and families have to opportunity to watch how the students progress with their musical talents with the concerts throughout the year.
