YOUNGSTOWN PLAYHOUSE ‘Sondheim in Love’ set to open Friday in Moyer Room

Staff report

The Youngstown Playhouse’s production of “Sondheim in Love,” a new musical revue, opens Friday and runs for two consecutive weekends in the theater’s Moyer Room.

“Sondheim in Love” was created by Valley theater veterans Tyler Clark, Donna Smith Downie and James McClellan. It features the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, who is considered one of the finest writers in the history of musical theater.

As a prelude to Valentine’s Day, the revue will focus on the many and varied love songs Sondheim has crafted throughout his 60-year career. Selections from such Broadway musicals as “West Side Story,” “Gypsy,” “Company,” “Follies,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Into the Woods” will be included.

Four performers will appear in the show: Clark, Christopher Hager, Kate Pelini and Jackie Stevens. Jan Crews will provide accompaniment. The production is directed by Smith Downie, with musical direction by Clark and Crews.

“The idea of programming a musical revue for the Griffith-Adler series [in the Moyer Room} is an unusual one for the Playhouse, and if the response to this one is positive, we’ll aim to include an evening of music each year, featuring the works of one songwriter or songwriting team,” said McClellan, who is also operations manager of the Playhouse.

Candy made by local chocolatier and veteran Playhouse actress Dana Dunnavant will be sold at each performance, and ticket buyers will be provided with a free sample of her treats.

The performance schedule for “Sondheim in Love” is as follows: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Feb. 10 and 11; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday and Feb. 12.

Tickets are $15 ($13 for senior citizens and $10 for students). For reservations or information, call 330-788-8739 or go to
