YSU horn clinic will feature 2 guests

Staff report

The sixth annual Youngstown State University horn workshop will take place Jan. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall.

Guest clinicians will be Gunnery Sgt. Greta Richard and Staff Sgt. Cecilia Buettgen, both members of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.

The event, sponsored by the Dana School of Music, is geared toward high school and college horn players.

It is free and open to the public and musicians of all levels.

The workshop is particularly helpful for students who will participate in solo ensemble competitions and for those who will be auditioning. Students should bring their own instruments but do not need to bring sheet music.

Richard, a French horn player, joined the Marine Band in 2000. The Minnesota native began her musical career at age 11, and earned a dual bachelor’s degree in music education and performance in 1997 from Ithaca College in New York. In 2000, she earned a master’s degree in music performance from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” she performed with the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa, the Dallas Wind Symphony and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Richard also currently performs with the Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra, and Marine Chamber Ensembles at the White House.

Buettgen, also a French horn player, joined the Marine Band in 2013. The Michigan native earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2010.

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Buettgen was the acting principal horn of the Beijing National Opera House in China and performed with the Columbus and Lima Symphony Orchestras in Ohio, among others. She also currently performs with the Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra and Marine Chamber Ensembles.

The workshop will include a recital featuring the guest artists and Dana horn professor Stacie Mickens, a question-and-answer session, a master class and presentations with the guest clinicians and a horn display by Motter’s Music.

Free parking will be available in the M32 Walnut Street surface parking lot located near the MVR, behind Bliss Hall.

Reservations are suggested; email Mickens at srmickens@ysu.edu or go to danahornsociety.com.
