Trumbull commissioners announce Weathersfield water and sewer projects

Weathersfield Township Trustee Marvin McBride said when a Weathersfield resident came to him with shampoo in his hair eight years ago and said something had to be done about the low water pressure in Mineral Ridge, he committed himself to doing something.
McBride said low water pressure in Mineral Ridge causes water to sometimes run normally for a while and then drop to a “trickle.”
On Wednesday, McBride thanked county officials who announced that the county sanitary engineer’s office has a plan to fix the problem within in the next two years.
“I’m proud to say what you have done for people in our area,” McBride told the county commissioners at their weekly meeting. “Thousands of people will be happy.”
The water project will cost $3,174,000 and includes the construction of a water tank and booster station to improve water pressure for 1,100 customers in Mineral Ridge.
But McBride also thanked the commissioners for a second Weathersfield project costing $2,128,486 to construct sewers in the Heaton-Chute neighborhood on the east side of state Route 169 just north of Niles.
Gary Newbrough, deputy sanitary engineer, said a study of Mineral Ridge showed that low water pressure is a problem at the higher elevations.
“Water pressure in Weathersfield has been low for a long time,” said county Commissioner Frank Fuda of Niles, a former Niles councilman.
A zero-percent state loan was obtained for the project, and water customers have been paying an extra monthly fee to begin paying for it, Newbrough said.
The new water tower will be on the township’s property on Prospect Street. It will break ground in the fall of 2018 and be complete by the summer of 2019, Newbrough said.
Fuda said he has firsthand knowledge of the sewage problems in the Heaton-Chute neighborhood because his son played in that neighborhood. There are about 130 homes there.
“The odor is so bad, it’s unbelievable,” Fuda said.
That project is likely to begin in October 2018 and be complete six months later.
