Carlson Scholarship established at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State has announced the addition of the Bob Carlson Scholarship to the university’s Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The scholarship was established this fall by Mary Ann Carlson, Bob Carlson’s wife of nearly 30 years. The Carlson family was honored during the YSU men’s basketball game against Robert Morris on Nov. 29.

Carlson was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was a two-time, first-team all-city basketball player. He later became a four-year letterwinner at YSU under legendary coach Dom Rosselli.

In his four years at YSU from 1973-77, Carlson played in 111 games scoring 678 points, grabbing 284 rebounds while dishing out 163 assists. As a senior in 1976-77, he helped the Penguins win 22 games and a spot in the Great Lakes Regional. YSU also advanced to the Regional in 1974-75 posting a 19-9 mark. That season was the best of Carlson’s career as he scored 260 points, averaging 9.3 per contest.

Carlson earned two degrees from YSU which led to a 35-year teaching career at Campbell Memorial. He was also the head basketball coach at Campbell, where he led the Red Devils to numerous successful seasons and later was assistant coach at Boardman.

Preference for the scholarship endowment will go to a student-athlete from Boardman or Campbell High School or a student-athlete majoring in education who is a member of the men’s or women’s basketball team at YSU.

“The Carlson family is happy to endow the Bob Carlson Scholarship to keep his memory alive,” Mary Ann Carlson said. “He will always be remembered as a kind, loving husband, father, teacher, coach and mentor who lived life with integrity each and every day.”

Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said Carlson was admired throughout the Mahoning Valley and the YSU community.

“Bob was a very prideful graduate and was very well respected by all of us at YSU,” McFadden said. “He enjoyed life to the fullest and we are thankful his wife, Mary Ann, and daughter, Ali, have endowed a scholarship in his honor. Bob’s memory will live on with this scholarship and student-athlete will benefit greatly from the families generosity.”

Indians plan additional safety netting for 2018

CLEVELAND

The Indians have announced plans to expand safety netting Progressive for the 2018 season.

The Indians will extend the current vertical netting behind home plate down the foul lines to the ends of the dugouts in an effort to better protect fans from hard-hit foul balls and bats flying into the stands. Also, the canopy nets will be stretched slightly farther down the third-base line.

At least six other MLB teams have expanded safety netting in the last three months, since a scary incident in which a young girl at Yankee Stadium was hit in the face by a foul ball .
