Copper stolen from Packard Museum

Copper stolen from Packard Museum

WARREN

Thieves entered a fenced area at the back of the National Packard Museum on Mahoning Avenue early Saturday and returned early Monday to steal copper from the museum’s three heat pumps.

Mary Ann Porinchak, museum director, said museum personnel were able to get one of the three units working again to maintain a safe amount of heat in the main collection and in a vault to protect the collections from damage.

Fortunately, the temperatures since the units were damaged have not been real low since the thefts occurred, Porinchak said.

Efforts are being made to find a permanent fix for the heat and also to better protect the heat pumps from future theft, she said.

It’s the first time in her 18 years at the museum something like this has happened, she said.

Minor basement fire

HUBBARD

A family and its dog are safe after a minor basement fire Tuesday at 555 Meadowland Court.

The fire was reported about 1:40 p.m. The Eagle Joint Fire District received mutual aid from Liberty and Brookfield townships. The fire was out within an hour.

Liberty Fire Chief Gus Birch said firefighters suspect it was an electrical fire but won’t be sure until the investigation is complete.

“These firefighters did a good job; if they waited longer, it could have been catastrophic,” Birch said.

Birch said there was no structural damage to the house, and the basement sustained minor damage.
