DePaul goes wire-to-wire to beat YSU

Max Strus scored 20 points with five rebounds, four assists and four steals and led five players in double-figure scoring as DePaul cruised to an 89-73 win over Youngstown State on Saturday at Wintrust Arena.

Strus was 8 of 12 from the field including three 3-pointers for the Blue Demons (3-4). Marin Maric and Tre’Darius McCallum added 17 points apiece, Eli Cain had 15 points and seven rebounds and Brandon Cyrus chipped in 12 points off the bench.

DePaul never trailed, averaging 57.6 percent shooting from the field compared to 43 percent for YSU.

Strus scored 11 points in the first half, making three 3-pointers and a dunk, to help lift DePaul to a 47-32 advantage at the break.

Braun Hartfield scored 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Penguins (2-7), who are on a five-game skid.

Hartfield tied a career high with five of YSU’s season-high 11 3-pointers.

Cameron Morse and Jaylen Benton also reach double figures for the Penguins, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

DePaul used its size to its advantage scoring 40 points in the paint and also turning 20 YSU turnovers into 27 points.

The Penguins visit Big East member and former Horizon League foe Butler on Saturday. Tip-off is set for noon at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
