Friendly Squares to have demonstration at Canfield Fair

The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 31 from 7-8 p.m. and Sept. 3 from 2-3 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. An introduction to 3-D printing

Find out what 3-D printing is, how it works and why this technology is becoming so popular in this class on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. No experience is necessary, and no computer skills are required. See a demonstration of loading a 3-D print job and watch the printer in action. This event is for adults and teens.

The latest in e-health technology

If you are wondering if you should buy a fitness tracker, a Bluetooth blood pressure cuff, a mobile EKG and more, this program at the Poland library on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. is for you. Try out the latest devices before you invest. Holly Klingler will demonstrate the latest e-health devices, discuss current findings and articles about their effectiveness, and show free apps that can help you get and stay healthy. This event is for adults and teens.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at this event at the Poland library on Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for ages 2-6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, taking place on every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Poland library every Thursday in September at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Dragons Love Tacos”

Go to the Poland library on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar. This is nacho average program, so bring the whole family. Snacks will be served. This event is for children of all ages.

Classic book has 50th anniversary

The classic children’s book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?,” written by Bill Martin, Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle, is 50-years-old. Help the Poland library celebrate with stories, games, crafts and snacks on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. This event is for children of all ages.

Listen and create

Listen to a story and then create something special at the Poland library on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. For September, listen to the story, “Fall is Not Easy,” by Marty Kelley, and then make your own tree. This event is for children of all ages.

Trim a tree for September

Decorate an ornament during regular hours in September for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree. This event is for children of all ages.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for ages 4-7.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Sept. 13 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Banned book bingo and pop trivia

Celebrate banned book week by playing bingo featuring covers of some of the most banned books on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. You will also play some pop trivia games. Prizes will be awarded and snacks will be served. This event is for grades 5-12.

Snack and learn sign language

This event is for fifth-eighth graders: go to the Poland library on Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. to learn sign language and about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided.

Researching your business plan

Stuart Gibbs, Business and Investment Center librarian, will discuss the library’s sources and services for your business start-up and beyond on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. The library will introduce print and electronic sources that can provide information for developing your business plan and explain where to find necessary statistics. Marketing with statistics

Join Stuart Gibbs, the Business and Investment Center librarian, on Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library for a seminar that is geared for entrepreneurs, business leaders and anyone interested in learning about competitors, potential clients, industry-specific economic forecasts, targeting new markets and market research. The featured databases, DemographicsNow - Library Edition, Neilson Segmentation and Market Solutions and ReferenceUSA’s U.S. Consumers/Lifestyles, bring timely and authoritative data and insights for your marketing plan. Other sources, including American FactFinder and trade associations for statistics, will also be discussed. Companies pay thousands for this type of information and it is available to everyone for free, right in their local library branch. This seminar will demonstrate access from your phone and computer. Appy hour

If you are wondering what an app is or which apps are right for you, attend this program at the Poland library on Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. to learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe or find great music to listen to on your walk. Registration is recommended, and can be made by calling 330-744-8636, and asking for Poland. This event is for adults and teens.

Connect with digital media at the library

If you would like to learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices, attend this class at the Poland library on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland branch to register. This event is for adults.

Offbeat book club

Join the Poland library on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. for the Offbeat book club. They meet on the first Thursday of every month for a themed club, no required titles to read, though some are occasionally suggested. September’s theme is “Nostalgia, or My favorite Childhood Book.” October will be “Thrillers.” November is “Families-Literary or Real.” In December, they will talk about their favorite fictional characters. This event is for adults.

Meetings to resume

American Association of University Women of Youngstown will be resuming their meetings for the year on Sept. 9 at Sunrise Assisted Living at 10 a.m. Leah Sakacs will be presenting information on the group’s new affiliate Young Women’s Task Force. Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament

Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. Weekly square dance lessons begin Sept. 12

The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills, as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa.
