AUSTINTOWN

Trustees decided to review a project plan from Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 and the Veterans Memorial Committee for a memorial honoring veterans who served in Middle East conflicts at the Veterans Memorial Park on South Wickliffe Circle.

Titled Middle East War Memorial, those veterans groups are seeking donations to cover materials and labor costs, estimated at $40,000.

Area artist Ray Simon, who is commissioned for the memorial, said his previous work bears educational significance and uses audio logs that viewers can listen to while observing a piece.

“They become a functional artwork, and that’s what we’re working on,” Simon said at Monday’s trustees’ meeting.

In another matter, a road-resurfacing effort, in collaboration between Austintown, Canfield and Boardman townships, will begin Sept. 6.

Township Administrator Michael Dockry said Austintown officials were unsure which township the resurfacing will start, but those details will be clear after a Wednesday meeting with the contractor Butch & McCree Paving of Hillsville, Pa.

The trustees moved to cite more than 20 properties designated delinquent by township zoning officials.

Trustees also decided to discard older fire gear used by the fire department considered obsolete by firefighting standards due to liability issues the gear could cause if used on duty.
