Local park to host car show

Boardman Park will be the location of a car show, hosted by the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club, on Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The fee to enter your car into the show is $10 per car, and there will be prizes awarded for those entered. A portion of the money raise, plus donations, will go toward helping a young person’s medical costs. The event is free to the public. Local churches to present Spirit Sunday

The Poland Community Churches will host their annual Spirit Sunday with the theme “Miracles of Jesus for Poland” at the Poland Village Gazebo (across from the Poland library) on Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. Messages based on Jesus’ miracles will be presented by participating pastors with refreshments to follow. All are welcome to gather for this summer evening of worship, song and fellowship. It is recommended to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. The rain location is Poland Presbyterian Church, located at 2 Poland Manor in Poland.

Get connected with digital media at your library

If you would like to learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices, attend this program at the Poland library on Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. Call 330-744-8636 and specify the library and program name to register. This event is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Poland library on Aug. 17 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and Aug. 25 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. This blood drive will serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Mercy Health mobile mammogram van offers screenings

The Mercy Health – Youngstown Mobile Mammogram van will offer mammograms at several locations around the Mahoning Valley during the month of August. Early detection of breast cancer is one of the keys to treatment and long-term survival. All women 40 and older should have an annual screening mammogram. The Mammography Van is a mobile mammography unit with private changing rooms and female technologists who perform the safe, painless low-dose X-ray with state-of-the-art equipment. The van will provide mammograms on Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital’s Farmers’ Market, located at 1044 Belmont Ave. in Youngstown; Aug. 10 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at Nile SCOPE, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles; Aug. 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. at Canfield Primary Care, located at 3660 Stutz Dr. in Canfield; Aug. 11 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Cortland Primary Care, located at 421 S. High St. in Cortland; Aug. 15 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at Stutz Primary Care, located at 3685 Stutz Dr. in Canfield and from 1-2:30 p.m. at Mineral Ridge Primary Care, located at 1360 N. DIY marshmallows

Learn to make marshmallows at home with just a few easy steps at this program at the Poland library on Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. The process will be demonstrated, and samples will be available for tasting. (Food waiver must be signed.) This event is for adults and teens.

Yoga class

Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in August from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland library. Pay as you attend at $10 a session. For more information, call 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.

Painting party for adults

Paint your own summer canvas for your home or for that special gift at this program at the Poland library on Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. No experience is necessary. All supplies and instructions will be provided. There is a $5 fee; cash or check only. Registration required, space is limited. This event is for adults.

Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA to meet on Aug. 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Aug. 8 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, tossed salad, jello and, for dessert, pie. The cost is $14 per person. Reservations may be made by calling Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2507 or Darlene Demjen at 330-755-9089 by July 31. The speaker for the evening will be Michele Gianetti of Canfield. She is an author of books about her daughter, Elizabeth, who has Dyspraxia. The books are written to help children growing up with a sibling who “isn’t like everyone else.” Gianetti’s books have been used by universities in special education and occupational-therapy classes. Special guests for the Aug. 8 meeting will include the group’s scholarship recipients. The public is welcome.

The Oakland Center for the Arts presents…

Join professional musicians for musical performances at the Poland library on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. This event will feature “A History of Blues.” This event is for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m.

Ice cream bash with games galore

Enjoy ice cream and games at the end of summer reading bash at the Poland library on Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. This event is for children of all ages.

Read to Roxie

Relax at the Poland library on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
