MORGANTOWN, W.VA. West Virginia quarterback Skyler Howard passed for 389 yards and five touchdowns and the Mountaineers dominated the second half in a 38-21 win over Youngstown State on Saturday.
Howard threw TD passes of 54 and 57 yards to Shelton Gibson, 53 yards to Ka'Raun White, 21 yards to Kennedy McKoy and 11 yards to Daikiel Shorts.
YSU (1-1) led 14-7 early in the second quarter after Penguins quarterback Ricky Davis connected with Alvin Bailey on a 74-yard touchdown and the teams went to halftime tied at 14.
But second half was all West Virginia as Howard threw two TD passes and Mike Molina kicked a 32-yard field goal in a 17-0 third quarter by the Mountaineers.
YSU backup quarterback Trent Hosick ran 15 yards for a TD to get the Penguins within 10 at 31-21 with 8:44 to play. But Hosick was picked off later as YSU was driving and McKoy's TD catch with 5:37 to play sealed it for WVU (2-0).
Gibson caught six passes for 171 yards and Shorts added six for 93 yards. White had five for 88 yards.
Mountaineers running back Rushel Shell ran for 84 yards on 16 carries.
Penguins running back Martin Ruiz has a 1-yard TD run early in the second quarter. He finished with 48 yards on 11 carries. Tevin McCaster added 41 yards on 12 carries. Jody Webb (injury) did not play
Davis finished 11 of 26 for 189 yards and led YSU with 62 rushing yards on 13 attempts.
Hosick was 4 of 6 for 31 yards and ran for 37 yards on four carries.
The Penguins host Robert Morris at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
