Attendance at the Canfield Fair hit a six-year high point this year, with more than 310,000 people visiting the fair over its six-day run.
That’s the highest attendance the fair has had since 2010, when 327,631 people came to the fair, according to fair officials.
“We’re very pleased with the numbers. Considering the weather this summer, those numbers are really good,” said fair manager Bev Fisher.
Nice weather was at least partly responsible for high turnout. Sunny skies prevailed most of the week, and temperatures were relatively low.
“I think the fact that we had five perfect fair days – perfect sunshine and cooler evenings – it brought people to the fairgrounds,” said fair board president Andy Frost Jr.
The only lackluster day was Wednesday, when the fairgrounds were hit with rain. After a slow opening day, however, attendance numbers quickly picked up, and peaked Saturday with attendance of 81,554 people.
The last day of the fair, Monday, drew 47,231 people.
This year’s attendance figures top last year’s by 28,358 people. The fair last year was hit by a brutal heat wave that likely kept people at home.
Fair officials also point to this year’s programs as a reason for good turnout.
“You’d like to say people came back for other reasons, but I think the cooler weather really helped – and we have a lot to offer,” said Fisher. “People came out to see what was new and different, and hopefully they were not disappointed.”
Fair officials could not be certain how visits from two high-profile guests – U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday – impacted attendance. The visits were officially kept hush-hush up until the politicians arrived at the fairgrounds, but rumors swirled for some time leading up to both visits.
“Putting it together, the directors work really hard, and they all have something special” to offer, said Fisher. “I think the fair overall is just one of the greatest events in the Valley.”
“It was just an awesome fair,” said Frost.
