YSU women’s golf on top after day one

The Youngstown State women’s golf team is off to a good start to the 2016 campaign taking a first-round lead at Monday’s YSU Kickoff Invitational at the Mill Creek North Golf Course.

YSU opened with a 301 and is four shots clear of Cleveland State which had a 305.

Indiana State sits in third place with a 308, Dayton is fourth at 310, Northern Kentucky is fifth with a 311 and Ashland rounds out the team standings in sixth with a 312.

YSU freshman Katlyn Shutt is tied for first with Indiana State’s Marissa Uradomo as both golfers shot rounds of 73.

Shutt had two birdies on the front nine and ended with birdies at No. 17 and No. 18 to card an even-par score of 35 on the back nine.

Another Penguin freshman, Reva Morris, also started her collegiate career strong and sits in a tie for third place with two other golfers. Morris had an opening round 74 and is one shot off the pace.

Three shots back of the leader is sophomore Megan Creager, who is in eighth place after an opening round 76.

Also for the Penguins, sophomore Christina Cooper is in 18th place following a first round total of 78 while senior Mia Barchetti is 24th with a 79 and Haleigh Guerrero is 31st with an 81.

The second and final round gets under way today at 9 a.m.
