Boardman’s Chris Butler raced to a first place finish, outpacing 158 competitors, to lead Boardman High School to a first place finish at the George Clements Invitational on Aug. 27 at University School in suburban Cleveland.
Boardman repeated as invitational champions finishing ahead of Mayfield and Kenston. Butler, who is already one of the top 25 all-time Spartan cross country runners, is the second straight Spartan to place first at University School; current Walsh University freshman runner Nathan Hadley placed first a year ago.
The Spartans placed five runners in the top 20, with Butler’s time of 17:04, senior Nick Digiacomo placing seventh in 17:59, junior Mark Moradian 12th in 18:40, senior Nathaniel Ams 13th at 18:42 and junior Luke Hetzel capturing 20th in 18:54.
“It was a very nice way to start our season,” said Spartan coach John Phillips. “We had a very positive performance at the OHSAA Preseason race in Columbus last week and continued to build upon that effort today.”
Freshman Mitchell Dunham was 28th, overall, and senior Matt Maroni was 34th at 19:40. Senior Dominic Eorio placed 39th at 19:48 and junior Jimmy Lagese was 42nd at 19:54 to round out the Spartans placing under the 20 minute mark on the difficult course at University School’s campus.
The first BW-3 ‘Runner of the Week’ is junior Luke Hetzel, whose top 20 finish enabled the Spartans to repeat as champions.
