Morse nets 29 in YSU victory
Penguins defeat Florida International
Junior Cameron Morse scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Youngstown State men’s basketball team to a 78-73 win over Florida International on Sunday at the Red Diamond Roundball Classic at the Mitchell Center.
Junior Francisco Santiago scored 13 points, including 11 in the second half, and senior Matt Donlan added 11 points for the Penguins, who improve to 2-3.
Leading FIU (1-4) was Michael Kessens with 21 points and Donte McGill with 19.
The game featured 19 lead changes and 11 ties and the Penguins finally broke through with about two minutes left in the game.
Morse buried a 3-pointer with 2:22 left to give Youngstown State a 67-66 lead and Devin Haygood’s putback at the 1:27 mark pushed the Penguins’ advantage to 69-66.
The Penguins then sank nine of 10 free throws with under a minute left to seal the win. Donlan and Santiago each made four and Brett Frantz split a pair for free throws with four seconds left.
Santiago also had six rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks while Haygood led the Penguins with seven rebounds and four blocks.
After shooting 37.9 percent in the first half, the Penguins connected on 51.9 percent in the second half and made 18-of-21 free throw attempts after halftime.
FIU never led by more than six points but led the game for 21:38 compared to 10:30 for the Penguins.
The game was tied for a total of 7:29. Youngstown State’s largest lead was eight points, 76-68, and 78-70, with 11 and four seconds left, respectively.
Tuesday, the Penguins will host Westminster in the fourth game of the Red Diamond Roundball Classic. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
