Shon Moore and Susan Decker won the 30th Warren Jr. Masters Bowling Tournament at Freeway Lanes.

The finals consisted of head-to-head match play with 30 bonus pins awarded for each win. Total overall pins determined the winners.

Charles Pawlosky finished second and Tavish Burd was third. In the final game, Pawlosky beat Burd 193 to 176. Moore shot a 215 in his final game and with the 30 bonus pins he moved to a tournament victory by five pins.

Decker fired a 266 and finished 143 pins ahead. Two-time defending champion Jessica Guesman was runner-up.

Scholarships totalling $600 were awarded.

OHSFCA opposes Friday Big 10 games

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association (OHSFCA) and several other coaches’ associations have joined forces to show their combined disappointment in the Big Ten Conference’s recent decision to play conference games on Friday nights beginning in 2017.

“We would like to express our disappointment with the Big Ten Conference’s decision to play football games on Friday nights,” Matt Dennison, president of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association and head coach at New Philadelphia High School said. “Our association is vehemently opposed to this action as it infringes on a great American tradition of high school football, is not in the best interest of student athletes, cripples the small budgets of high school athletic departments, disrupts the relationships between high school coaches and Big Ten coaches, and hinders the recruiting process.”

The OHSFCA has joined with high school football coaches’ associations in Michigan, Minnesota. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin in opposing the decision.

Brookfield golf gives back to community

Brookfield’s State Golf Team helped pack 150 bags of food for the Backpack Program to help those in need.

Members of the team are Bryce Schell, Nathaniel Smoot, Conner Stevens, Justin Atkinson, Brady Reichart, Dustin Moffett, Jake Shingledecker, Hunter Haines and Jon Ellcessor

The Backpack Program has been in existence for several years and has become a huge part of the community.

Mill Creek hosts Snowbird Scramble

Mill Creek Golf Course hosted the second-annual Snowbird Scramble Tournament.

Dr. Joe Malys, Bob Walley, Tom Coyle and Jerry Ferrell won with a score of 60.

Mikey Roberts, Shannon Morrow, Anthony Gallo and Nick Flaviano finished second with a score of 61.

Nick Flaviano and Dr. Dick Marinelli won the “Closest to the Flags” skill events.

U.S. loses 4-0 in World Cup qualifying

The United States put itself in a deep hole in World Cup qualifying with one of its worst performances in decades.

Taking advantage of defensive mistakes, Costa Rica routed the U.S. 4-0 Tuesday night to drop the Americans to 0-2 for the first time in the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

Johan Venegas scored in the 43rd minute, Cristian Bolanos doubled the lead in the 69th and second-half substitute Joel Campbell beat beleagured goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 74th and 77th minutes in the worst margin of defeat for the U.S. in a qualifier since a 5-1 defeat at Mexico in November 1980.

Combined with Friday’s 2-1 loss to Mexico at Columbus, Ohio, the U.S. finds itself in a quick deficit in the hexagonal, which resumes in March.

Ticos fans sounded air horns at the end of a match that reignated questioning of coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s tactics.
