Everyone wants to go out and get a five-star meal without having to dress to the nines and break the bank. And we found just that at Steamers Stonewall Tavern.

“Steamers has that Cheers-like atmosphere where the dress is casual, and you still get high-end food without emptying your wallet,” says owner Josh DeNapoli.

The story begins about 20 years ago at the DeNapoli family’s first restaurant — the Main Street Cafe in central Pennsylvania.

Mama D (Susan DeNapoli) ran the kitchen, creating and modifying the family recipes that the customers craved, and some are now on Steamers’ menu.

In 2003, Mark and Josh DeNapoli remodeled the current location and opened what is now Steamers Stonewall Tavern. Steamers gets its name from the steamer sitting behind the bar that is ready to make any number of shrimp, mussel or clams dishes. The bar is lined with flat screen TVs, so you can camp in front with a burger and watch any game.

Our server, Kate Larson, found us a table in the center of the restaurant where we could see this fine operation in action.

We started our meal with a few of their famous appetizers: calamari, shrimp, tuna bites and a cheeseburger soup, before choosing our burgers.

The menu offers several specialty half-pound burgers: the Pittsburgh Cheeseburger (American cheese, french fries, homemade coleslaw and thousand island dressing, prepared with everything on it); chef Frank Schiraldi’s Bistro Burger (red wine fig compote, melted Brie cheese, red wine reduction); and Mango Pepper Jack Cheeseburger (pepper jack cheese, mango salsa).

If you do not find the specialty burgers to your liking, you can create a burger any way you want.

The burgers are sided with fresh cut fries and served on a delicious toasted kaiser roll.

I went with the Mango Pepper-Jack Cheeseburger that had a delightful aroma. The mango had that sweet flavor, which tasted great, while at the same time getting some mild heat from the pepper jack cheese. The burger was perfectly cooked to a medium temperature and was very juicy. The kaiser roll soaked in all those juices and did not falter one bit to the lip-smacking last bite. I took this gastronomical feast to the next level with two slices of pepper bacon. This is a burger I can see coming back to enjoy many times.

Eric also chose the Mango Burger and commented, “It’s not common to see a burger paired with any kind of salsa, but after years of enjoying my sister-in-law’s mango salsa I knew this was the best selection for me. The first bite confirmed this. The pairing of beef, salsa and pepper jack cheese was a taste sensation. I ordered my burger cooked medium. The kaiser roll that kept everything in place had no problem staying together until the last amazing bite. I’m already planning my next trip with my family to sample other items on the menu, but I can guarantee you these burgers alone make Steamers worth any trip.”

Scott had one of his favorites, saying, “I am a fan of the Pittsburgher burgers, so when I saw the Pittsburgh Cheeseburger I had to give it a try. One of the main ingredients on the Pittsburgher is the coleslaw, and it was a rich, creamy sweet slaw which enhanced the flavor of the burger without dominating the overall taste. All of this served on a toasted kaiser roll. This burger was one of the best Pittsburgh hamburgers that I have ever had!”

Spatman went off menu and built his own little burger feast. “I started with a half pound angus patty grilled well done then added Swiss cheese, grilled onions, bacon, lettuce and mayo,” he said. “The first bite told the story as the flavors mixing together set my taste buds a rockin’. More bites and more flavor kept me hoping this burger would never end. I give this burger a 41/2 out of 5 on my wet nap scale.”

Chiz ordered the Bistro Burger, and noted, “It was a luscious 8 ounces of fresh char-grilled patty, seasoned phenomenally, slathered with red wine fig compote, topped with a hefty thick slice of Brie cheese, and covered with a red wine reduction. At first, my taste buds were confused as it was almost too exquisite — too classy to be considered a burger. I really enjoyed the flavor of the burger itself. That, and the bun, were the only reasons I knew this was still just a burger. I had the feeling I was devouring a much finer beef product. The fig compote was sweet, and the Brie cheese was terrific, blended with the red wine reduction.”

We all agreed that Steamers has plenty of class and is worthy of many return visits.

The DeNapoli family found something that works and continues to adapt to the changing trends while keeping Mama D’s core values.

Steamers also has a banquet hall and an outdoor patio where you can enjoy a nice relaxing evening.
