Youngstown woman gets two OVIs, shot in arm all in one day
Monday was not a good day for Nicole Hester.
She started the day getting cited twice on OVI within a couple of hours. She ended it by getting shot in a front yard on Cohasset Avenue.
The passenger with her the second time she was cited, Olivia Mollenkamp, 24, of Columbus, also was wounded in the shooting about 7:20 p.m. Monday.
Hester, 21, was cited in her first OVI about 1:50 a.m. on Route 711, then taken to the Canfield Post to be processed. She was released with a court date. A licensed, sober driver, who reports said was Mollenkamp, picked her up and drove her home.
Hester had been pulled over on state Route 711 for speeding and a lane violation and reports said her car smelled of marijuana and she had bloodshot eyes and appeared drunk. A trooper searched her car and found suspected marijuana and cocaine underneath the seat where her passenger, Bernard Hasley, 26, was sitting. The trooper searched Hasley further and found a loaded .38-caliber handgun and a plastic bag of bullets in a cast he had on his leg, reports said.
Hasley is in Mahoning County jail on $40,000 bond after he was arraigned Monday in municipal court on charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of drugs.
About 3:40 a.m., a Canfield officer spotted the vehicle Hester was in speeding on Fairgrounds Boulevard near Surrey Avenue and pulled it over, and Hester was driving, reports said.
Hester was asked to take a field sobriety test, and she failed, reports said. Officers found out about her charges from the patrol and placed her under arrest for OVI.
Mollenkamp said she had marijuana in her purse but when police searched it they found cocaine, reports said. Mollenkamp was charged with possession of cocaine and released with a court date, reports said. Hester refused to take a breath test at the police station before she was given her charges and released on citation.
Detective Sgt. Ron Rodway of the city police department said Hester was standing in front of a home in the 600 block of Cohasset Drive on Monday night when someone in a car fired several shots at her, striking her in the arm and shoulder. The person then jumped out of the car, chased Mollenkamp down and shot her twice.
