Man admits sex crimes against minors

Staff report

A Mahoning County prosecutor is recommending seven years in prison for a 46-year-old North Side man, who pleaded guilty to sex crimes involving minors.

Ronald D. Gibson, of Margaret Avenue, entered his plea Monday before Judge Shirley J. Christian of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who will sentence him at 9 a.m. Dec. 29.

Gibson pleaded guilty to one count each of voyeurism, gross sexual imposition and sexual battery, with three victims.

If Judge Christian were to impose maximum consecutive sentences on all counts, Gibson would be imprisoned for 11 years and fined $22,500.

The voyeurism offense occurred Oct. 18, 2013, when the victim was 16.

The gross sexual imposition was between Dec. 19, 2011, and Feb. 28, 2012, when the victim was 8 years old.

The sexual battery occurred between April 1 and Oct., 31, 2012, when the victim was 15 and 16 years old.

In the plea agreement, sexual battery was a reduced charge that replaced a rape count in the indictment.

The prosecution dropped one additional rape count and two additional GSI counts in the plea deal.

Gibson will have to register for life as a sex offender quarterly with the sheriff’s office.

The case is being prosecuted by Jennifer McLaughlin, an assistant county prosecutor. The defense lawyer is Thomas Zena.
