Friday night killing over a woman, Youngstown detective says

YOUNGSTOWN

City police say a man who was shot late Friday and died early Saturday was arguing over a woman with the man accused of shooting him.

Kenneth Evans, 57, died at about 3 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after being shot in the stomach at about 10 p.m. Friday in the street of the 1900 block of Manhattan Avenue. Evans is the city’s seventh homicide in 2016.

Arrested a few hours after the shooting at a home on West LaClede Avenue was Bernard Barnes, also 57. He was originally charged with felonious assault but the charge is expected to be upgraded to murder, said Lt. Doug Bobovnyik of the Youngstown Detective Bureau.

Bobovnyik said detectives were able to identify Barnes as a suspect from interviewing several witnesses. He is being held in the Mahoning County jail pending his arraignment Monday in municipal court.
