The Jewish Community Relations Council will conduct the 23rd annual community Holocaust commemoration event set for noon Thursday in the rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse.

The event will feature a presentation on children in the Holocaust, a preview of an exhibition on local survivor Henry Kinast, the recognition of the winners of the JCRC’s annual student Holocaust writing contest as well as a memorial candle-lighting ceremony.

Facing rape charge

David J. Schmitt, 18, of Watson-Marshal Road in McDonald, was arraigned Monday in Niles Municipal Court on a rape charge. No plea was entered, and bond of $100,000 was set. He returns for a preliminary hearing May 11.

McDonald police said the offense occurred April 24 and involved a girl, 11. Schmitt was arrested on the charge Friday and taken to the Trumbull County Jail. McDonald police were notified by the McDonald school district Friday of the allegation.

New prison warden

Steven Merlak has become the warden of the Federal Correctional Institution here after the departure of Warden Ralph Hanson, who became the warden at FCI Three Rivers in Texas.

Merlak is a native of Wisconsin and began his career with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons in 1991 at the Phoenix Community Corrections Office. He has served within the Bureau of Prisons in Florida, California, Illinois, Arizona, Pennsylvania and most recently, New York. Merlak has a master’s degree in justice studies from Arizona State University. He lives in Columbiana with his wife, Connie, and two sons, age 14 and 9.

Man shot in hand

YOUNGSTOWN

Police said a man ran into a South Side home at 4:40 p.m. Sunday after someone shot him in the hand.

Police were called to the first block of West Lucius Avenue, where a man told police that someone he knows only as “Chip” tried to rob him and shot him in the hand.

The homeowner told police she was cooking dinner when she heard someone run inside. She found the man in an upstairs room pleading with her not to let the man shoot him. Police found a shell casing near the home. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
