Warren police investigating shooting death, kidnapping

Staff report

A man is dead and a woman was apparently kidnapped after a home invasion Friday night on Stephens Avenue Northwest.

The crime was reported to police at 6:53 p.m.

Lt. Martin Gargas of the Warren Police Department said the suspect entered the home and quickly shot to death a 41-year-old man, who is possibly from Niles.

The suspect then took both women hostage and left in a white GMC van owned by one of the women.

One of the women, however, escaped from the van at the intersection of West Market Street and Iowa Avenue Northwest, but the other woman and the suspect had not been found as of press time.

Police continued to search the area, looking for the van and the missing woman, who is white, 36 years of age with dark hair.

The reports said the assailant was identified as a black man.

The stolen van belongs to the woman who escaped, police said. Reports said the van was later recovered.

If the shooting death turns out to be a homicide, it will be the second one in the city this year.

The first was Jessica A. Crowder, 36, who was shot to death June 24 at the house on Hamilton Street Southwest, where she lived.

A witness said Roleigh Culver, 27, of Elmwood Drive, Howland, Crowder’s boyfriend, killed Crowder. Culver then walked to a nearby house and killed himself, police said.
