Four organizations in Youngstown and Warren benefited

The Raymond John Wean Foundation has awarded $130,000 in grants to local organizations Empowering & Strengthening Ohio’s People, Inspiring Minds of Warren, Tabernacle Baptist Church-CDF Freedom Schools and We Are Warren.

Aligned with the foundation’s strategic priorities of community revitalization, economic opportunity, educational opportunity (including early childhood, 0-5) and public-service leadership, each organization provides solutions to challenges faced by the youth and senior-citizen populations of the Mahoning Valley, said Jennifer Roller, foundation president.

Empowering & Strengthening Ohio’s People, or ESOP, was awarded $30,000 in support of its Senior Financial Empowerment Initiative, which provides financial education to increase the financial stability of low- to moderate-income seniors.

Inspiring Minds, which supports activities to engage, inspire and empower youths through education and exposure to new experiences, was awarded $25,000 for the College & Readiness component of its Enrichment Program.

A grant of $20,000, over two years, will support the Tabernacle Baptist Church Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools, which offers 50 students in kindergarten though sixth grade a six-week program at no charge to families that is academic in nature. The students are recruited from Youngstown City Schools and surrounding districts.

A grant of up to $55,000 was awarded to promote a package of approaches in support of We Are Warren, a communitywide initiative developed with more than 600 Warren parents, students and community members to ensure that youths of Warren live safe, healthy and productive lives.

The Warren City School District, in partnership with the city of Warren, was awarded up to $25,000 for staff to fulfill near-term goals of the We Are Warren Framework, including outreach and coordination and expanding and enhancing current service offerings.

Inspiring Minds also received a grant for up to $25,000 to concentrate on the areas of the We Are Warren Framework.

Eastern Ohio Education Partnership was awarded up to $5,000 for the development of a community portal designed to house education-related programs.
