Backpack distribution set Aug. 22 at Covelli Centre

NOW Youngstown is partnering with Youngstown City Schools to host a back-to-school celebration featuring a giveaway of backpacks filled with school supplies, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Covelli Centre.

There also will be gospel music, free food and carnival games.

Backpacks are being prepared for 2,000 students. The cost of a backpack with supplies is $8. Monetary donations are being sought to help fund the project. Send donations and checks payable to Heart Reach Ministries, P.O. Box 778, Youngstown, OH 44501.

Volunteers will assemble book bags Aug. 18 and 19 at Trinity Fellowship, 4749 South Ave., Boardman.

NOW Youngstown is in a cooperative effort with Community Initiative to Reduce Violence, Youngstown Police Department, social service agencies and Valley churches in sponsoring the ongoing Increase the Peace Rallies in high-crime areas.

Rallies, planned from 6 to 8 p.m., are scheduled Wednesday at ESA Apartments, 1110 Kendis Circle; Friday at Metro Assembly of God, 2530 South Ave.; July 21 at Borts Field, 151 S. Belle Vista Ave.; July 28 at Arlington Heights Community Center; Aug. 4 at Kirwan Homes, 101 Jackson St., Campbell; Aug. 11 at Rockford Village, 1402 Dpgwood Drive; and Aug. 25 at Taft Elementary School, 730 E. Avondale.

Coordinators are William “Guy” Burney of CIRV, and Pastors Al Yanno of Metro Assembly, Rolanda Rojas of Spanish Evangelical Church and Rafael Cruz of Unity Baptist Church in Boardman.
