Ex-teacher pleads guilty

Staff report

A former Warren G. Harding High School remedial-reading teacher will be sentenced next month after her guilty plea to a gross sexual imposition charge stemming from an encounter with an 18-year-old male student.

Amanda Basile, 31, of Austintown, pleaded guilty last week in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to the fourth-degree felony charge, which was reduced from the third-degree felony sexual battery charge on which she was indicted.

Her plea agreement says the prosecution recommends she be sentenced to “a period of incarceration deemed appropriate by the court.”

It adds: “Defendant agrees that some form and period of incarceration will be imposed.”

Basile could be imprisoned for up to 18 months and fined up to $5,000, and she will have to register as a sex offender.

Basile, who was hired by Warren schools in 2012, resigned after admitting to Warren police in April that she engaged in the sex act with the student outside of school hours.

Warren police referred the matter to Austintown police because the crime occurred in Austintown, and Basile was indicted by the Mahoning County grand jury in May.

Judge Lou A. D’Apolito will sentence Basile at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 23.
