Five people indicted on separate Liberty and Warren home-invasion charges

Two of the three people accused of participating in a May 18 hostage situation at a home on Hadley Avenue in Liberty Township were indicted Friday by a Trumbull County grand jury.

Sandra M. Pavelko-Smith, 47, of Everett Avenue in Youngstown, is indicted on five counts of kidnapping, one count of aggravated burglary, two counts of felonious assault and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

If convicted, she could get about 80 years in prison.

Kenneth E. Macek, 68, of Parkside Drive, Youngstown, is indicted on all of the same charges except being a felon in possession of a firearm. His prison sentence also could add up to 80 years if he’s convicted.

The grand jury refused to indict the third man named in the incident, Ralph W. Smith Jr., 35, of Seneca Street in Youngstown. He had been charged with burglary, complicity to kidnapping and obstructing official business.

Liberty police said Pavelko-Smith forced her way into the home in the 3100 block, resulting in a three-hour standoff with police from Liberty, Girard, Warren and Youngstown.

Eventually, eight people were released after being held hostage, including a 4-year-old girl.

Also indicted in a home-invasion robbery were Ashley M. Baritell, 31, of Wood Street in Niles, Mitchell M. Wilson, 25, of Jackson Street Southwest in Warren, and Elisha D. Wyche, 40, of a different Jackson Street Southwest, Warren, address.

All three were indicted on single counts of aggravated burglary and two counts each of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and felonious assault.

Warren police said they arrived at a house on Phillips Drive Southwest at 1:15 a.m. July 28 to find two women and a man committing an armed burglary while holding two victims hostage with firearms.

All three were taken into custody. If convicted, each faces a possible prison sentence of about 60 years.

Indicted on a rape charge is Ronald A. Woods, 33, of Gilbert Avenue in Mineral Ridge. He’s accused of raping a 56-year-old Paige Avenue Northeast woman in Warren on Jan. 6.
