Boardman toppled by Massillon Perry
Recently, the Spartans boys baseball team played only one game due to weather conditions. Boardman lost a heartbreaker at Massillon Perry 4-3. Trailing 1–0 in a pitchers dual the Spartans plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3–1 lead. Perry answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 3-2 going to the seventh. Massillon kept the Spartans scoreless in the top of the final inning. Boardman’s pitcher then hit the lead off hitter for Perry to start the bottom of the inning. Four batters later Perry’s hitter blooped a hit over shortstop scoring the winning runs. Spartan starting pitcher Jake Baun pitched into the sixth inning, giving up only one earned run while striking out four with one walk. Offensively, Eddie Crump had two hits, including a double with two RBIs and Phil Diianni added a double and one RBI for Boardman.
Popio joins All-PSAC West First team
Dan Popio, a 2012 graduate of Boardman High School, had his first season in a Mercyhurst uniform leading the squad in several offensive categories. After transferring from Youngstown State, Popio led the Lakers and the PSAC West with a .427 batting average, pounding out 50 hits in 117 at bats. He also led the team in doubles (13), runs battled in (36), slugging percentage (.538), walks (32) and on-base percentage (.561) while trying for the team lead in runs scored with 35. His .561 on-base percentage leads the team, the PSAC, and the country. Popio ranks 14th in the country in batting average (.427) and 28th in the country in walks (32). He leads the Lakers with 11 multiple-RBI games and is second on the team with 16 multiple-hit outings.
Ritter resigns as Mooney coach
Bill Ritter, girls’ basketball coach at Cardinal Mooney High School, has announced his resignation. Ritter, who has headed the Lady Cardinals program for four years, has coached in the area for 20 years. In addition to his tenure at Mooney with both their girls’ and boys’ program, Ritter also coached at Boardman for 10 years. Applicants for the vacated position should send letters of interest to athletic director Don Bucci.
