ELECTION UPDATE | Austintown school levy defeated

Published: Tue, May 6, 2014 @ 9:20 p.m.

With all votes in Austintown counted, the school district's 4.1-mill bond issue for a new high school was soundly defeated by voters. The total of those voting against the bond was 4,311 compared to 2,239 in favor, an almost 2-1 margin of defeat.

Also it appears Michele LePore-Hagan will win the Democratic primary for the 58th Ohio House District seat. She has nearly 50 percent of the vote in a four person-race with 100 of the district's 143 precincts counted.

Amen to that! Hagan will be the driving force behind his wife's candidacy, and that is enough in my book to vote for anyone else!!

My compliments to the voters of Austintown! They were smart enough, I hope, to see through the false and self-serving arguments of the school board and levy committee who believe that good education cannot be achieved unless we have new schools every few years! They have fooled the voters before, but not this time! Buildings do not educate children.... and when we stop measuring our educational success with the newness of our buildings but instead measure by the absolute intelligence of our graduates, we will truly have educational excellence in Austintown! Let me also add that the true owners of the old AMS property on Mahoning Avenue are the descendants of those who gave it to the community to use for education to whom ownership returned when Austintown stopped using it for that purpose! For the school board to sue to retain ownership when they no longer meet the terms of the agreement is one of the worst examples of attempted theft I personally have ever seen. The entire board should be removed in the next election!
