Relic from history lesson causes precautionary Austintown lockdown

Published: Fri, May 2, 2014 @ 2:11 p.m.

An empty ammunition box from the Vietnam War led to a precautionary lockdown today at Austintown Fitch High School.

The security measure lasted about 20 minutes after it was confirmed that a sophomore student brought the box in to show to his teacher and class, Principal Chris Berni said. The sophomore class is learning about the war.

The student left the box in the lunchroom by accident and police at the school enacted a lockdown until it was ensured it was empty, Berni said.

Berni sent out a call to parents and a district email about the lockdown. It ended at about 12:30 p.m.

Wow what a way to overreact!!! Are people any more so scared that they have to go to extremes when they see anything even remotely related to a gun? Its an ammo box people!

I think it was handled well. The 20 minutes on lockdown was well worth finding out if it were some sort of dangerous device. I'd rather they err on the side of caution. Today's world is not what we grew up in.

Apparently your level of awareness is confined to a small area. In December 2012, a thing happened. I've provided a link: http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/27/justice...

There have been similar things since then.

If I'm in the school's position? Better to be safe than sorry.
