Youngstown firefighters battle three blazes

Staff report

Firefighters battled blazes at three vacant structures on the North Side late Monday and early Tuesday.

Crews were called to a vacant duplex at 1819 Ohio Ave. about 10:20 p.m. Monday and found smoke coming from the second floor. Crews were able to get inside and put the fire out. Damage is listed at $5,000.

About 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, crews were called to 706 Norwood Ave. for a vacant garage that was engulfed and was allowed to burn down. Damage is listed at $500 there.

While answering that call, crews responded to a vacant 908 Delaware Ave. home with heavy fire on the first floor rapidly spreading to the second floor.

Firefighters were hampered by a broken hydrant on Clyde Avenue, reports said. Before the blaze was put out, two cars were destroyed, the siding on two neighboring homes buckled, and the windows on one of those homes were blown out by the heat.

Damage there is estimated at almost $7,000. The home was a complete loss.

Reports say all three fires are under investigation.
