Free nutrition class
Youngstown State University nutrition students will present a free nutrition class, “Eat Well, Be Well,” that will focus on carbohydrate counting and a healthy heart. The class will be at 9:30 a.m. March 17 at the Mayor Ralph A. Infante Wellness Center, 231 Sharkey Drive.
The students will explore basic carbohydrate-counting skills, label reading and a healthy heart; knowing blood glucose and lipid numbers; learning about foods that contain carbohydrates and counting; label reading and glucose target ranges; and learning healthy guidelines and label reading.

Assistance for health insurance
ValleyCare Health System of Ohio is offering enrollment assistance for health insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace by the March 31 deadline.
Application counselors will assist uninsured individuals and their families to evaluate the available health plans and determine if they’re eligible for Medicaid or other insurance options.

The Affordable Care Act requires that most Americans obtain health insurance by 2014 or pay a tax penalty. The penalty will be applied to annual taxable income for each month for those who do not have health insurance after March 31, the last day to enroll.
Based on household income and dependents, individuals may be eligible for health insurance coverage at no cost through Medicaid.
Acts of Courage award nominees
Nominate a hero for the American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley’s 2014 Acts of Courage Award.
The award recognizes an individual whose heroic event occurred in any location, but between Jan. 1, 2013, and April 1 this year. Award recipients will be honored during a special reception and dinner hosted by the Red Cross.
The Red Cross annually presents the Acts of Courage Awards to Mahoning Valley residents who have acted courageously and selflessly in a time of emergency.

UPMC Horizon Medical Staff scholarship trustees are encouraging medical students in the UPMC Horizon service area who have successfully completed their first year of allopathic or osteopathic medical school to apply for an annual scholarship. The application deadline is April 15.

Bariatric surgery information session
NEW CASTLE, PA.
Sharon Regional Health System will host a free bariatric surgery informational session at noon March 19 at the New Englander, 3009 Wilmington Road.
The session includes information on obesity and its impact on overall health, a review of surgical weight- loss options including benefits and risks, a look at body mass index, along with other information to assist participants in making an informed decision about surgical weight-loss treatments.
