YOUNGSTOWN

The upcoming “Night of Champions” amateur boxing show at St. Mary’s Assumption Center, 356 S. Belle Vista Avenue will feature Ronnie Hamayel as its main event when he takes on Anthony Brown of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Proceeds from Saturday’s show will benefit the No Stone Unturned Foundation, led by Youngstown State head football coach Eric Wolford and wife, Melinda.

Fifteen bouts are plannes.

Presented by Lights Out Management, fighters representing five area gyms are slated for the card while nine other hopefuls from Ann Arbor’s A2 Boxing Academy are expected to compete.

Hamayel (10-10), who fights out of Dickie Green’s Boxing Club, is scheduled to take on Brown in a 140-pound pairing.

It’s a battle Green welcomes for Hamayel after serving as his trainer for the past year.

“This is Ronnie’s first fight since last June and despite the layoff, is ready to go,” Green said. “As long as he keeps throwing combinations, he should be fine. We just don’t know too much about his opponent.”

Johnson’s manager, Eric McGuire, calls the fight one that his boxer needs at this stage of his career.

“Anthony, like Ronnie, is a busy fighter so expect to see plenty of punching and non-stop action once they step into the ring,” McGuire said. “We’re also bringing down Cedric Johnson, who in the past has gone up against Brown. They’re teammates now and have nearly 30 fights each under their belts. They help each other prepare for their fights and both will be ready for action this weekend.”

Local trainer Keith Burnside, who has two fighters on the card, is hoping to use this weekend as a warmup for the Cleveland Golden Gloves, which has weigh-ins later this month and begins on April 5.

The two Burnside B.C. fighters are Chris Miller (140 pounds), who will take on Amado Diane, and Tom Flannery who will go up against Charles Kirk in a 195-pound match.

Miller is 1-0. Flannery, a student at YSU who serves on their athletics equipment staff, has won his first two outings.

“Both Chris and Tom will be facing boxers from A2 gym, each of whom has more fights under their belt than we do,” Burnside said. “Miller is a boxer who throws nice combinations. He’s tall, has power, can move and works everything off of his jab. Flannery played football at Cardinal Mooney High School and is a brawler who is in great shape. He stopped his first opponent and decisioned the other, but Kirk is a different story who is expected to provide a real test this time out.”

Jasmine Hampton, A2’s six-time female national champion, will meet Tiffany Walker, a 20-year-old fighter from Dover.

Hampton is 36-4 overall and has won five majors; the Police Athletic League and Junior Olympics each twice and Silver Gloves.

Set to be honored with its “Men of the Year” award will be Atty. Lou Schiavoni and his son, State Sen. Joe Schiavoni. A “Lifetime Achievement Award” will be presented to Henry “George” Budaker.

The card is set to begin at 7 p.m. with doors to open at 6.

General Admission is $15, VIP tickets are $50, and tables may be reserved for both $300 and $400.

Ticket outlets include Clemens Wine Cellar (330-792-7176), Mike Cefalde (330-787-4228), Tom Kordell (330-717-4201) or the No Stone Unturned Foundation (217-766-0073).
