Columbus district closing 5 schools

Published: Wed, March 5, 2014 @ 11:15 a.m.

COLUMBUS (AP) — Columbus is closing five of its schools at the end of the school year.

The district’s board of education unanimously approved the closings Tuesday night to cut costs. The buildings include a high school, middle school and three elementary schools.

Students will be redistributed to other school buildings.

Superintendent Dan Good told the board that closing the schools would save $10 million toward the goal of $50 million in budget cuts for the next school year. Good warned that major staff reductions are coming, too.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the five buildings to close will be added to the 40 or so that have been shuttered in the past decade.

The district has been hit by declining enrollment, less state money and a data-scrubbing scandal.
