ash wednesday Services at Valley churches

Area churches plan services for Ash Wednesday, March 5. This marks the beginning of Lent, a season of spiritual renewal.

African Methodist Episcopal

Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW, Warren: Service at 7 p.m., with speaker the Rev. Glenn Hamilton of First United Methodist Church and its choir.

CATHOLIC

Christ Our Savior Parish, at Holy Trinity Church, 250 N. Bridge St., Struthers: Services at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. and at St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers, 7 and 9 a.m. and 3:15 and 7 p.m.

Holy Apostles Parish, 12:15 p.m. service with ashes at St. Stephen of Hungary, 854 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, and ecumenical service with Ambassadors for Christ with ashes at 7 p.m. Mass at 5:30 p.m. with ashes at Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4490 Norquest Blvd., Austintown: Services will be at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, 291 Scoville Drive, Vienna: Holy hour of reparation at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Blessing of ashes and distribution before Masses at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Stations of the Cross will be at 7 p.m. Fridays during Lent.

St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman: Masses at 7 and 8:30 a.m., 12:10 and 7 p.m.

St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown: Masses at 7 and 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and service with ashes at noon.

St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., Youngstown: Distribution of ashes at 12:10 p.m. Mass and 7 p.m.

St. Dominic Church, 76 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown: Masses at 6:30 and 8 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m.

St. Michael Church, 300 N. Broad St., Canfield: Mass at 9 a.m. with ashes, Liturgy of the Word with ashes at 12:15, 5:30 and 7 p.m.

St. Patrick Church, 357 N. Main St., Hubbard: Masses with distribution of ashes at 6:30 and 8:30 a.m., noon and 7 p.m.

St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown: Masses at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard: Masses with distribution of ashes at 7 and 8:30 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. and liturgy of the word service with distribution of ashes at 3 p.m.

COVENANT

Faith Community Covenant Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown: Service at 7 p.m. with impostion of ashes in the chapel.

DISCIPLES OF CHRIST

First Christian Church of Girard, 140 E. Broadway Ave.: Beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing on Wednesdays throughout April 16, the church will be open from noon to 1 p.m. for quiet reflection, silent Scripture reading, prayer and self-serving communion. A prayer guide will be available.

Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman: A prayer vigil is planned from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ash Wednesday. Members are asked to sign up for half-hour to hour slots; members will pray at their homes or at the church. A service will be at 6 p.m.

EPISCOPAL

Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE, Warren: Service at 10 a.m. in the chapel and 7 p.m. in church.

St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., Boardman: Service at 7 p.m. with Holy Eucharist.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown: Shrove Tuesday pancake supper from 6 to 8 p.m. Imposition of ashes at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. with the Rev. Allan Belton.

LUTHERAN

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman: Services at noon and 6:30 p.m. and continuing at those times Wednesdays throughout Lent through April 9.

Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman: Services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown: Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday with imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.

Grace Lutheran Church, 111 Hall Ave., Hubbard: Service at noon Ash Wednesday.

Historic Lutheran Church of St. John, 1429 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown: Holy Eucharist with ashes at 12:05 p.m. and brief order of imposition of ashes with sung litany at 5:30 p.m. Lenten Wednesdays service at 12:05 p.m. with chapel Eucharist and Lenten homily.

Hope Lutheran Parish, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4920 Fairport Road, Newton Falls, Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 6 p.m. and Ash Wednesday service at noon and Trinity Lutheran Church, 56 N. Chestnut St., Niles, service at 7 p.m.

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield: Services with Eucharist and imposition of ashes at noon and 7 p.m.

Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive, Youngstown: Worship with imposition of ashes at noon followed by soup lunch and 7 p.m. Lenten services will be at noon and 7 p.m. March 12-April 9

New Life Lutheran Church, 1181 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty: Services at noon and 7:30 p.m. with Holy Communion.

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2985 Center Road, Poland: Imposition of ashes at noon and 7 p.m. Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown: Service with Holy Communion and imposition of ashes at 7 p.m. A dinner will be at 6 p.m.

Trinity Lutheran Church, 56 N. Chestnut St., Niles: Trumbull County Lutherans gather for 7 p.m. service led by confirmation students at the church.

Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Cornersburg: Services with Holy Communion and distribution of ashes at noon and 7 p.m.

Zion Lutheran Church, 10857 Main St., New Middletown: Community worship service at 7:30 p.m. with meal at 6 p.m.

METHODIST

Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., Boardman: Worship and communion at 7 p.m. in the chapel with Chancel Choir.

Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St., Canfield: Worship service at 7:30 p.m.

Church Hill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty: The Rev. David Gilbert, senior pastor, will be in the sanctuary from 6 to 7 p.m. for imposition of ashes. A meditation guide will be available.

First United Methodist Church, 22 N. Market St., Girard: Communion service at 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday.

Trinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St., Youngstown: Service at 6:30 p.m. with imposition of ashes, worship and reflection.

PRESBYTERIAN

Ellsworth Presbyterian Church, 11171 Akron-Canfield Road, Ellsworth, and Lake Milton Presbyterian Church will conduct a joint Ash Wednesday service with communion at 7 p.m. at Ellsworth. The Rev. Bonnie Dutton will preside, and Frances Fischer, ministry candidate, will preach.

First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown: Vesper service with ashes at 7 p.m. in Helen Chapel with short meditation by the Rev. Carolyn Griffeth preceded by board of deacons’ covered-dish dinner at 6. Members of Butler Memorial Church, John Knox Presbyterian and Hungarian Presbyterian Church are invited.

First Presbyterian Church, 3654 Main St., Mineral Ridge: A free fish dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a service at 7 in the sanctuary that will include the celebration of the Lord’s Supper and the imposition of ashes.

Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor, Poland: Services will be at noon and 7 p.m. with communion and imposition of ashes. The evening service also will include a choir with members from the host church, Westminster Presbyterian, Pleasant Grove Presbyterian, Canfield Presbyterian and Wickliffe Presbyterian churches.

Westminister Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman: Service at 4 p.m. in the chapel.
