Boardman girls fall short of state meet
The Boardman girls track team qualified five events to the OHSAA regional track and field meet on May 30 at Austintown Fitch High School. The team didn’t qualify anyone to the OHSAA state meet, but they competed hard in their attempt to get to Columbus.
In the 800-meter run, junior Regan O’Hara raced to seventh place and a spot on the podium as the top eight received points and podium honors. O’Hara ran her career best time of 2:19.32 in her attempt to make the state meet. She was ranked ninth going into the regional meet.
In the 1600-meter run, senior Katelynn Morrell raced to her career best time of 5:22.46 to place eighth and she too improved from her ninth place ranking going into the race. The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Arianna Cuevas, juniors Regan O’Hara and Alison Green and senior Jada Redd raced to eighth place in the finals with a time of 4:02.3. In the semifinals they ran a season best time of 4:01.44 and went into the finals ranked in sixth place.
Senior Emma Schwendeman ran 11:39.70 to place eleventh in the 3200-meter run and led off the 4x800 meter relay team which included juniors Heaton O’Hara and Regan O’Hara and senior Trista Cunningham. They finished in eleventh place with a time of 9:52.37.
“I felt bad for the girls as I know how much they wanted to go to state,” Head coach Denise Gorski said. “They gave it their best effort and that’s all we could ask for. They along with the rest of the team have had a very successful season and I’m so very proud of all that they accomplished this season.”
