1776: Virginia’s colonial Legislature becomes the first to adopt a Bill of Rights.

1898: Philippine nationalists declare independence from Spain.

1920: The Republican National Convention, meeting in Chicago, nominates Warren G. Harding for president on the 10th ballot; Calvin Coolidge is nominated for vice president.

1924: President Calvin Coolidge is nominated for a term of office in his own right at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. (Coolidge had become president in 1923 upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding.)

1942: Anne Frank, a German-born Jewish girl living in Amsterdam, receives a diary for her 13th birthday, less than a month before she and her family go into hiding from the Nazis.

1956: The Flag of the United States Army is officially adopted under an executive order signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1989: Youngstown’s income-tax collection has slowed, and the city is losing thousands of dollars in interest income annually because of an understaffed collection department.

The sale of GF Corp.’s office furniture business to Westinghouse Electric Corp.’s furniture division could create a more competitive company, but makes the Youngstown plant “vulnerable” to closing, says an industry analyst.

Three members of the Mahoning Valley Soccer Club — Michael Griffith and Michael Martin of Boardman and Timothy Houle of Howland — are selected to play on the Ohio-North State Select team. Also named to the team is Jason Keller of Boardman, who plays for the East-West Soccer Club, and Chris Tartler of Boardman, who plays for the Sons of Italy.

1974: The Akron regional office of the Urban League announces a nonpartisan voter education and registration drive directed at Youngstown’s South Side.

Michael D. Braydich, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, and Donald R. Stiffler, a graduate of Salem High School, are commissioned second lieutenants in the Air Force and awarded bachelor degrees during commencement at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Dr. Phil Davidson, former Rayen School athlete, is one of 42 men to serve as game officials for the new World Football League.

1964: Paul Amendolara, 9, is killed while riding his bicycle on the sidewalk on Albert Street and four girls between the ages of 10 and 14 are seriously injured from a car jumping the curb. Police move in quickly to take the driver, who had been drinking, away after an angry crowd surrounded the vehicle.

John Holibonic, 8, of Campbell is killed when his bicycle collided with a car at 13th Street and Penhale Avenue.

The Wick Mansion on Logan Avenue, for 50 years a symbol of opulence of another age, is being razed to make room for home sites in the Wildfern Drive area.

1939: Dr. Stephen Cholar, 49, of Lisbon drowns when a speedboat carrying him and four other men overturned in Lake Milton. Nine-year-old Donald Booth is credited with saving the other four men when he sped to the scene in his motorboat.

Nearly 900 students of Youngstown parochial schools — Ursuline and Villa Maria high schools and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing — are graduated during a Cleveland diocesan commencement ceremony attended by 65,000 people at Cleveland Stadium.

U.S. Rep. Michael Kirwan introduces legislation to allow Erich Hecht, internationally known steel man of the Netherlands, to remain in the United States so that he can develop his process for reclamation and utilization of slag and other steel mill refuse.
