CLEVELAND

A Youngstown man has been sentenced to 90 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a four-count federal child-pornography indictment.

Christopher Cavna, 27, formerly of Mahoning Avenue, drew the sentence Wednesday from U.S. District Court Judge Christopher A. Boyko.

The available sentencing range was 25 to 180 years.

The indictment said Cavna knowingly allowed two children to engage in sexually explicit conduct in May 2013 for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct.

It also said he knowingly received and distributed numerous computer files containing images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct between October 2011 and October 2012 and knowingly distributed two such computer files May 20, 2013.

The case was investigated by the Youngstown FBI office, the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force and the Ohio Adult Parole Authority.

“It shows that the judge clearly appreciated the devastation caused to the two children he molested, as well as the harm that he perpetuated to the other victims, whose sexually exploitive images he traded,” Michael Sullivan, the assistant U.S. attorney who prosecuted Cavna, said of the sentence.

In a sentencing memorandum, Cavna’s federal public defender, Timothy C. Ivey, said his client is extremely remorseful and was urging the judge to impose the minimum sentence because it would be “sufficient, but not greater than necessary” to achieve federal sentencing goals.

Cavna is a registered sex offender because he was convicted of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor in February 2011, according to an FBI affidavit.

That conviction was on a state charge in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. Cavna was placed on three years’ probation in that case.

The affidavit was filed in support of the federal charges on which an FBI agent and a probation officer arrested Cavna at his residence May 20, 2013.

When he was arrested, Cavna admitted using his cellular phone to photograph a child engaged in sexual activity with him and to transmit child pornography, the affidavit said.

The location of that sexual activity was recognizable as the basement shower area of Cavna’s residence. A search of Cavna’s cellular phone revealed child-pornography images of a 6-year-old girl, the affidavit said.
