YOUNGSTOWN

Police say an elderly man looking for a parking space struck and killed a woman at the Sparkle Market on South Meridan Road about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Officer Brian Booksing said 79-year-old Glenn Thom of Youngstown was pulling forward into a parking space when he struck a 69-year-old Canfield woman.

The woman was pinned beneath Thom's car and the car also hit a building, Booksing said.

The woman was killed. Her name is being withheld until her family is notified of her death.

Booksing said it is not known yet if any charges will be filed.

Older folks are caught in a dilemma. If they give up their driving when they are a little impaired, they become isolated. If they don't, they risk things like this. What we need is REAL alternatives for these people.
