The Manor Restaurant in Austintown was established in 1970. However, you can imagine that a lot has happened since those first days. It seems that a lot has happened since the short 8 years ago when Don Harkins first purchased The Manor from the restaurant’s original owner.

Three partners later and having repurchased the lease from an operator that he leased it out to, Don certainly has stories to tell and is only comfortable truly taking ownership of the Manor’s performance for the past two to three years. That is when he personally took it over, gutted it out and remodeled it, as well as adding the patio.

Ron George is the chef of The Manor. Owner Don and bar manager Kathie Kowalski couldn’t say enough about him, his creations and his love for doing whatever it is that the customer truly wants. “Our motto is, we are the caretakers of your place. We just want you to make it your place,” Don told me while we sat on the patio on a sunny Thursday evening surrounded by dinner plates.

When we first arrived, Kathie came over and recommended some of the house favorites, so we ordered all of them. The wedding soup made in house, ($2.99/cup, $3.99/bowl); the Fried Italian Greens appetizer, sauteed in olive oil with fresh garlic and seasoned to perfection, topped with pecorino Romano cheese and Hungarian hot pepper ($7.99); the Mussels Bianco, sauteed in mild garlic white wine sauce with a hint of lemon ($8.99); the Eggplant Sandwich, fresh sliced eggplant fried and topped with marinara sauce, greens and provolone cheese on fresh baked bread ($7.99); the Scapetta pasta, hot Italian sausage, chicken, sweet peppers and Spanish onions in a garlic madeira wine sauce topped with diced tomatoes and pecorino Romano cheese served over cavatelli ($14.99); and the Jumbo Fried Haddock, Haddock Panko crusted and served with house-made tartar sauce ($14.99). I would definitely recommend these as well, my favorites being the eggplant sandwich and the fried haddock.

The Manor likes to keep people happy and entertained, and therefore, it has a special night almost every night of the week. Mondays are barbecue central, when they smoke the meat in house, Tuesdays are taco night, Wednesdays are wing night, Thursdays are tapas night, Fridays, of course, are fish and Saturdays are prime rib.

However, it needs to be noted that every other Thursday is Creole night and Ron really shines with the Creole food because he spent four and a half years in New Orleans.

There is entertainment for you to enjoy every weekend. Every other Thursday features a two-person band from West Virginia, called The Weed Hawks who are supposed to be out of this world. Other well-known artists that serenade The Manor’s clientele on alternating Saturdays are Frank Castellano and Teddy Pantelas, and both are masters of their craft.

Along with the restaurant and the entertainment, I really should mention the banquet facilities, where Danielle, who is the main server of banquets, is known by the people who repeatedly book events here. The room is included with the cost of the food and they open on Sundays for special events.

During my visit, the Austintown Fitch High School Class of 1957 was gathered for their 57th reunion. I spoke with two ladies, Lunetta Hoffman Moherman and Pat Baker Woodworth, who were so happy with their gathering at The Manor and proud, definitely, of being graduates of Fitch in 1957.

Go see Don, Kathie, Ron and the numerous other people who make this place a cozy one to settle into with a beer, a good plate of food and some good entertainment.
