Cleveland man charged with fatally shooting his 2-year-old son

Published: Wed, June 11, 2014 @ 2:50 p.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) — A Cleveland man suspected of shooting his 2-year-old son in the head has been charged with aggravated murder.

A police spokeswoman says a court appearance is set Thursday for 23-year-old Derrice Alexander.

Police say the toddler, Derrice Alexander Jr., apparently stood on a staircase landing and was struck when his father fired into the window of a home from outside during a dispute with the child’s mother early Tuesday. The boy died at a hospital.

Cleveland’s police chief says Alexander shouldn’t have had a weapon because he’s a convicted felon. Court records show he was sentenced in 2011 to serve two years in prison in an assault case.

Life is cheap in the cities. This man had no need for that gun. Was the child a threat?
