For Gloriana singer, Flatts tour is surreal
By John Benson
Literally from the time she was 5 years old, Gloriana singer Rachel Reinert has lived by the motto “All I wanna do is have a little fun before I die.”
Now, to be fair, the then kindergartener wasn’t thinking on an existential level. Instead she was just singing along to her favorite single, Sheryl Crow’s first hit “All I Wanna Do.”
It’s for this reason that it’s quite apropos Gloriana was pegged as an opener for Rascal Flatts’ “Rewind Tour 2014” that also includes Sheryl Crow.
“It’s amazing,” said Reinert, calling from a rare day off at home in Nashville. “It’s so cool because I grew up loving Sheryl Crow. She’s my first youthful memory, with a cassette tape of ‘All I Wanna to Do.’ Sheryl knows the story, and it’s cool because she’s from the same town as my mom.
“Her grandfather is a doctor who actually delivered my mom and her sisters. So we have this weird full-circle connection with each other. It’s very weird. I adore her and love her.”
Making the entire experience even more surreal is Gloriana and Sheryl Crow join Rascal Flatts nightly to sing a cover of Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is a Highway.” Another song audiences can look forward to hearing when attending the tour’s Friday show at Blossom Music Center is the new Gloriana track “Best Night Ever.”
The groove-oriented tune marks the new music released by Gloriana in more than two years. Granted, the act has been together for six years, but there’s a feeling in the band that this marks a new chapter.
Even though former member Cheyenne Kimball left the group — via Twitter — three years ago, she was involved in the recording of the band’s 2012 sophomore release “A Thousand Miles Left Behind.” Kimball’s voice was removed from the album but her presence wasn’t.
That’s why Reinert said the trio’s upcoming third album, due later this year, marks a new beginning.
“This album was very freeing to us,” Reinert said. “We’ve always been on the same page with what we’ve wanted to do. We’re all growing up. When we first came up, I was 18 years old. We’re not the young kids riding round the car singing ‘Wild at Heart’ anymore. And that whole situation was such an eye-opening thing for us. It made us work extra hard.”
Considering the title of Gloriana’s latest single, naturally Reinert was asked about, well, her best night ever. However, a disclaimer was given to her that she couldn’t give the obligatory and cliched “every night she’s playing a concert or in front of an audience” answer.
That said, Reinert disobeyed the request and instead delivered a heartfelt answer that makes sense.
“I have been dreaming of doing this since I was a little kid, and I’m telling you, there’s no better feeling than when we get on a stage, because it doesn’t happen every single night,” Reinert said. “I felt early on where you’d go to certain places and you can tell when you’re being played on the radio.
“You see those people engaged and singing along and they genuinely love what you do. That to me honestly is my idea of the best night ever, because it’s not like that every night for us. We’re not at that point in our careers.”
